HOUSTON—The Houston Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas will feature NBA Star Earvin “Magic” Johnson as guest speaker for Houston Money Week’s annual “100 Teens” event.
Johnson will speak at 10 a.m. on April 4 at the Houston Federal Reserve Branch, 1801 Allen Parkway. Following the event at 11 a.m., there will be a media availability with Johnson. Media registration is required. Contact: Angie Montelongo, (713) 483-3539.
Houston Money Week is the city’s premier financial education initiative. Sponsored annually by a coalition of community partners, including the Houston Federal Reserve Branch, Money Week offers free financial education opportunities for all age groups, income levels and financial backgrounds.
“Johnson was a natural fit as this year’s speaker,” said Daron Peschel, senior vice president at the Houston Branch. “Since retiring from professional basketball, he has been a trailblazing entrepreneur, mentor and advocate for urban community reinvestment. He is passionate about community engagement and working with students.”
Houston Money Week’s signature event, “100 Teens,” provides select Houston-area high school seniors the opportunity to spend a day at the Federal Reserve learning about financial principles to help them be successful in college or careers.
“We are excited to have this opportunity to connect both our employees and local students with someone so committed to helping communities improve their financial future,” said Donald Bowers, vice president at the Houston Federal Reserve Branch. “We are very grateful for Magic Johnson’s support of Houston Money Week and look forward to hearing him speak.”
Money Week events are held throughout the Houston area. Programs and activities are designed to reach a wide variety of audiences, from elementary school children to veterans. This year’s events are scheduled for April 1-8.
“The key to long-term financial success is having the knowledge and skills to make informed and smart financial decisions,” Bowers said.
