About Our Branch
San Antonio Branch Student Board of Directors
From Classroom to Boardroom to CommunityThe San Antonio Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas is proud to establish the Student Board of Directors in partnership with the San Antonio Independent School District. The Student Board of Directors is a unique opportunity to give interested high school students exposure to the Federal Reserve System while also providing information about the importance of economics, business and the free market system. Student Board members meet monthly at the San Antonio Fed, discuss economic issues with academic and business leaders, and get an insider’s view of daily Fed operations. Students will learn hands-on about their local economy while becoming better prepared for college, the workforce and community involvement. They also develop leadership skills by participating in a community education project, which enables them to share their knowledge of the Federal Reserve with other students. The Selection ProcessHigh schools within the San Antonio Independent School District will select representatives to serve on the Student Board for a one-year term. Board members must be high school seniors in the top quarter of their class. Interested students must apply through their individual schools. Contact information can be obtained from the student’s school program representative or from the San Antonio Fed.
Program ScheduleStudents serve for one academic year from October through May. Meetings are held monthly at the San Antonio Fed, typically every third Thursday from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Student Board members are expected to attend all monthly meetings, participate fully in all discussions and complete a community education project. Special events, such as receptions with parents, may be scheduled at other times. Meeting AgendaAt the monthly meetings, guest speakers—including senior Fed economists and staff, academic experts, and business and community leaders—give presentations on Federal Reserve operations and economic issues. A question-and-answer period follows. At times, students have the opportunity to participate in behind-the-scenes tours of the Fed and San Antonio-area businesses. Program BenefitsThe Student Board program provides exceptional opportunities for personal and professional growth. Participants explore real-world issues affecting the nation’s economy and financial system. They work closely with senior decisionmakers at the Federal Reserve and with the corporate and civic leaders who serve on the San Antonio Fed’s Board of Directors. They also serve as ambassadors of the Federal Reserve in their own community, where they are challenged to share what they have learned. Participation can be included on a student’s transcript/resume upon successful completion of the program. |
