For immediate release: October 22, 2012
Helping Texas families build assets and gain financial stability is the focus of an upcoming two-day summit sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas and RAISE Texas.
“RAISE Texas Training and Summit: Providing the Tools for Financial Stability” will be held 12:30 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. Oct. 29 and 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Houston Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, 1801 Allen Parkway, Houston, TX.
Participants can register to attend at www.dallasfed.org.
“Despite the continuing economic recovery, some Texans are still living paycheck to paycheck and struggling to stay financially afloat,” said Alfreda Norman, Dallas Fed vice president and community development officer. “Many families don’t have a plan for saving their way to financial stability. This summit will provide community leaders with the information they need to help families in their area absorb financial shocks and achieve economic security.”
Day one on Oct. 29 features training sessions and workshops designed to provide attendees with information on a variety of topics, including small-dollar loan alternatives, financial coaching and family budgets.
The summit on Oct. 30 will focus on several important issues for asset building in Texas, including:
- A state policy update on payday and small-dollar lending, financial education in schools and college savings
- Tax-time savings and children’s savings accounts in Texas
- Innovative asset-building tools in technology in Texas
- Financial empowerment centers in Texas communities
Louisa M. Quitman, director of financial education for the Office of Consumer Policy in the U.S. Department of the Treasury will provide the keynote address on Oct. 30.
Other speakers will include Ann Baddour of Texas Appleseed; Don Baylor of Center for Public Policy Priorities; Laura Ewing of the Texas Council on Economic Education; Fran Rosebush of United Way Greater Houston; Terry Johnson of New Seed Initiative; Anthony Cacheria III of Ganart Technologies; and Tim Morstad of AARP Texas.Â
