About Henry G. Cisneros

Henry Cisneros is chairman of American CityVista, a joint venture with KB Home, constructing affordable housing in central cities. Cisneros is also chairman of Pacific City Homes, an urban housing fund in California, and Ventana Homes, which builds affordably priced homes in smaller Texas cities. He is founder of American Sunrise, a nonprofit housing corporation in San Antonio.

In 1981, Cisneros became the first Hispanic–American mayor of a major U.S. city—San Antonio. During his four terms, he helped rebuild the city's economic base and create jobs through massive infrastructure and downtown improvements, earning San Antonio a reputation as one of the nation's most progressive cities.

From 1993 to 1997, Cisneros served as secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. He is credited with revitalizing the nation's public housing developments and formulating policies that have contributed to today's record home-ownership rates. Cisneros later became president and COO of Spanish-language broadcaster Univision Communications.

Cisneros is a former deputy chair of the board of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas and past chairman of the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. He presently serves on the boards of Countrywide Mortgage, The Enterprise Foundation and the New American Alliance. He holds bachelor of arts and master's degrees in urban and regional planning from Texas A&M University, a master's in public administration from Harvard University, and a Ph.D. in public administration from George Washington University.
